Canvas Issue 8

The new issue of Canvas, This is Not a Rehearsal, seeks to affirm cultural resilience and the need to always look towards the horizon, to keep creating and embracing new ideas that express the irrepressible human spirit. With this edition emerging during the global pandemic, we look back to the pre-lockdown events and fast-forward to our present time.

The cover features a work by Chloe Wise framed with disembodied hands and a sanitizer from an exhibition last year, that has been completely recast in our current context. In an in-depth artist profile, we examine her exploration of the fluid dynamics between individuals and groups through a renewed resonance as we seek to reconfigure our relationships and ways of being together. Also included in this issue is Para Site's recent look back at SARS, Gypsum Gallery’s Codes of Coupling, MACAAL’s Have You Seen A Horizon Lately? and Jameel Art Centre’s landmark Michael Rakowitz exhibition. We also give our take on Cao Fei's virtual cities, online tours of Alserkal Avenue's galleries, as well as Mona Ayyash's musings on boredom and live music broadcasted from the balconies near Barcelona. Plus, we ask HE Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi and Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi questions on the United Arab Emirate's cultural landscape, Barbara Pollack and Anne Verhallen tell us why art is important at a time like this, Annabel Daou renders sounds of the future visible and Himali Singh Soin composes a poem from the perspective of space.
