Garage Issue 18

A magazine issue is a time capsule, and this one is a reflection of the people, the art, the music, and yes, the fashion that we returned to again and again in the past six months. We were emboldened to reach out to our icons and idols for this issue those who could bring us a vague measure of hope as the world became more apocalyptic around us.

It was impossible to imagine publish-ing a magazine this fall that was not covered by Michaela Coel, whose series I May Destroy You has showed us a new way of storytelling that incisively captures the subtle truths about living life authentically, while navigating a world that is often brutal. Liz Johnson Artur’s pictures of Coel possess a surreal quality, perhaps because Coel’s talent seems almost otherworldly, some-thing Durga Chew-Bose manages to capture exquisitely in her profile. Also at the top of our list was also Mary J. Blige, whose music is an eternal source of comfort. When Hood By Air’s resurrection was announced in July, we knew we had a match made in heaven. Wearing the label exclusively throughout, and captured by Renell Medrano’s unfailing eye, Blige radiates her take-noshit essence and her regality from the page. She’s looking at us, asking us what are we going to do with this time? That frankness was echoed in her conversation with HBA’s Shayne Oliver, in which the two shared their vulnerabilities and found common ground in their disparate lives. We thought about our collective power, and how we can support and uplift one another.
